With Biogas Merse, Gruppo Metano Toscana brings a new circular energy model to life: agricultural biomass from the Merse valley is turned into renewable power for the region.

The plant converts local biomass into biogas, currently used to generate electricity. The next milestone is upgrading to biomethane—a renewable, fully certifiable energy source that can be seamlessly injected into existing grids, designed to supply the Group’s fueling stations and power sustainable mobility.

The distinguishing feature of the project is its closed-loop supply chain: energy originates in the fields, is processed locally, and returns to the community. Even agricultural vehicles will be able to run on the biomethane produced from the very biomass they help generate, reducing the use of fossil fuels.

A facility rooted in the local territory

Biogas Merse specializes in the production of renewable energy from agricultural biomass, contributing to the development of a sustainable energy supply chain that is fully integrated with the farming sector.

Today, the plant produces:

  • Approx. 1,000 kW/h
  • Over 24,000 kWh per day
  • Power supplied directly to the national grid

From Biogas to Biomethane

Biogas Merse is entering a new phase of development: upgrading the facility for the production of biomethane from biomass.

The new configuration is projected to produce:

12,000 Smc /of biomethane per day

This evolution will enable:

  • A significant increase in energy capacity
  • Greater production process efficiency
  • The synergy between renewable energy and sustainable mobility
  • Continued contribution of energy to the national grid

A closed-loop production cycle

The project is built on a circular economy model designed to valorize every phase of the production process.

Agricultural biomass yields:

  • Renewable energy
  • Biomehtane
  • Digestate

Digestate, a natural byproduct of the process, is recovered and repurposed as a high-quality organic fertilizer for agricultural land. This effectively closes the loop, ensuring a tangible reduction in waste.

  • Lower Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions
